7 Layer Bars

I think that every family has a recipe for 7 layer bars.  I got this recipe from my husband’s Grandma Nan but the first time I made them for a hunting trip my cousin stated “these are my favorite bars.”  And he was referring to bars he used to have in his own childhood.

I think the name might be a little wrong though, there are 7 ingredients.  Once you mix the butter and the graham crackers it becomes one layers for a total of 6 not 7 layers.  But in the spirit of tradition, let’s overlook that fact and continue calling them 7 layer bars.

Here’s what you need:

Start by melting the butter and crushing the graham crackers.  One sleeve of graham crackers is about enough.   I usually use a large plastic bag and my rolling pin to crush them.  Add the graham crackers to the melted butter and stir together until the graham crackers are completely coated.

Pour into a 9×13 pan.  Press with your fingers into an even layer.  It’s going to seem like there aren’t enough crumbs to cover the entire pan, but trust me there are.

Now we start the layering process.  First sprinkle on the coconut.

And the chopped nuts.

Now the chocolate chips.

Followed by the butterscotch chips.

Drizzle on the sweetened condensed milk.   I used to start by trying to evenly drizzle in nice little criss-crosses.  But soon realized that there is plenty in the can that you end up going over it so many times the pretty drizzles go away (and they soak in when you bake anyway).  So just make sure you get the sweetened condensed milk over the whole pan because it holds everything together. I don’t even worry about the heavier sections anymore  – you can’t tell once it’s baked.

Bake at 325 degrees for 25-30 minutes until lightly golden around the edges.

Cool completely before slicing into bars.
