Strawberry Nutella Panini

It’s June and that means in Minnesota it’s about to be strawberry season.  We typically have a short strawberry season here and so we wanted to help you prepare for that by posting a few of our favorite strawberry recipes over the next couple weeks. That way you’ll be all set to head to a strawberry farm and enjoy one of my favorite fruits of the season. The first recipe is a fun breakfast treat, a strawberry Nutella panini.

Chocolate and strawberries is a classic combination so why not chocolate hazelnut spread and strawberries.  I don’t remember seeing the idea anywhere, although I may have seen a strawberry Nutella crepe on a menu somewhere that gave me the idea for the pairing.  All I know is that I had bread from making a savory panini, and I happened to have strawberries in the fridge and Nutella in the cupboard and I was craving a sweet breakfast. This turned out to be a very tasty breakfast for all of its simplicity, just bread, strawberries and Nutella.

Here’s what you need:

Start by slicing some strawberries just under a quarter inch thick.  These aren’t hand-picked strawberries since it’s still a little early in the season for that.

Brush two slices of sourdough bread lightly with olive oil.

Spread a thin layer of Nutella on to the non-oiled slides of the bread. You can really spread it as thick as you want, to me it can get too sweet if you add too much but go with your own taste here.  It’s also important to add Nutella to both sides of the bread so it can act as glue for the strawberries and as a barrier for any juices that seep out of the strawberries as they heat up.

Arrange the strawberries evenly across the bread.

Place into the your panini press heated to medium-high heat.  The Cuisinart Griddler (#EarnsCommission) is my favorite panini press, I especially love that the plates reverse and there is a cool waffle attachment.

Cook until lightly golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.

I sliced them into quarters because it seemed somehow fitting to cut it that way.  The strawberries and the Nutella warm up just enough that it even though the Nutella is already spreadable it tastes like gooey melted chocolate.

Besides being a good sweet breakfast this also makes a unique dessert.
