Classic Tartar Sauce

March 26, 2015 by Dana 1 Comment

My husband’s grandparents used to own a restaurant in our hometown that specialized in made from scratch comfort food. As a result my mother-in-law has a lot of great make from scratch recipes, from full meals to simple sauces like this tartar sauce.

Tartar-Sauce-1

I’ll be posting walleye fingers tomorrow and before I could post those, I needed to share a homemade tartar sauce with you!  This recipe is great for us because we can make exactly how much we need.  For some reason we don’t use tartar sauce all that often so if we buy a bottle, we end up throwing away at least half of it.  And since this tartar sauce is so easy –you might as well whip it up yourself with things you probably have in your fridge right now.

Here’s what you need:

Tartar-Sauce-2

Combine the mayo, pickle relish and mustard in a bowl.

Tartar-Sauce-3

Mix together.  Taste and adjust the proportions until it suits your taste.  Allow to chill in the fridge for about an hour before serving.

Tartar-Sauce-4

Yes, it is that easy!!

If you want to change it up try these 2 varieties.  I made both plus the classic recipe above for the walleye fingers and couldn’t decide which I liked better.

LEMON:  Stir in 1 to 1-1/2 t fresh lemon juice.

HOT: Stir in a 1 t fresh lemon juice and 1-1/2 t hot sauce (such as Frank’s Red Hot)

Instead of buying tartar sauce, mix up your own with ingredients you probably already have on hand.
